Tips for Relocating with Pets
Moving is stressful enough, but relocating with pets can be especially tough. As a pet owner/parent, you can do some things to help the transition to a new space. Here are some Tips for Relocating with Pets.
1. Safety First
Be prepared to get your pet to your new home safely. Whether you are traveling by plane, train or automobile, pack the basics for your pet. Try to include food, medicine, water, blankets, grooming tools, and toys.
2. Proper Identification
It’s imperative that your pet has proper and accurate identification. Make sure your pet’s tag is up-to-date with contact information. Many vets also recommend having your pet microchipped surgically in case they lose their collar. You’ll want to make sure you have your information updated online as well.
3. Stay Away from the Action
During the actual move, it’s best to keep your pets in a quiet place and not around all the action. This will help reduce stress on the animal. Make sure they are in a safe temperature and have enough food and water with them.
4. Locate a New Vet
Finding a new veterinarian should be a top priority once you arrive in your new location. You could ask your previous vet for a recommendation or check local reviews, city relocation guides, or message boards. New neighbors with pets are also a valuable vet resource.
